Milestone - Addition of new data types in schema (2.5) #850

From proposal:

Integrating new microbiome data types
Through discussions with users, we learned that there is a desire for the NMDC to house new data types, specifically data types that do not fit well in existing primary repositories. The NMDC will engage with users directly to prioritize the inclusion of new data types (Milestone 2.5), which will be available through the Data Portal (Data Portal, Milestone 4.2). For example, we can adapt the schema to new data types, such as imaging data (e.g., X-ray computed tomography, XCT), that provide information about the physical structure of an environmental sample, and spectroscopy data that provide information on the abiotic components of a biosample that interact with the microbiome (e.g., minerals). Engaging with subject matter experts and the broader research community will inform the NMDC metadata capture process, and enable expansion of existing community standards, such as EnvO (e.g., porosity of soil determined by XCT). These standards are necessary to enable standardized search in the Data Portal, and subsequent meta-analyses (e.g., exploring relationships across soil attributes and community function and structure).

Discussed today with Emiley, Shreyas and Alicia. Asking Montana if this can be discussed more at the metadata meeting next week. @emileyfadrosh @aclum I'm adding this to Q2 even though on the spreadsheet it was under Q1. It won't be done this quarter.

We are in Q4, not Q1. if we bump this to Q2 we likely need to bump 4.2 since that depends on 2.5

Ok it's on for Q1. May need to be moved again after discussion next week.

I checked with Lee Ann and she said between Montana and Yuri they should be able to weigh on on this issue from the PNNL perspective. I'm waiting to hear back from Yuri if he can attend the metadata meeting next week or not.
