People have expressed interest in the ability to cite a specific version of NMDC EDGE. This is according to the following comment in another issue:

Also a beta testing comment - people wanted to know for citation purposes what version numbers they are using

At this point (as of version https://github.com/microbiomedata/nmdc-edge/releases/tag/v0.1.0-alpha.3), the web server presents a version identifier via an API endpoint (/api/version), but that version identifier is not shown on the GUI.

Task

[ ] Design how the version identifier will be shown (e.g. provide it as part of a complete citation snippet?)
[ ] Implement what was designed
