This branch includes all commits from the branch in PR https://github.com/microbiomedata/nmdc-runtime/pull/542, except for the commit that reformatted lots of files that were unrelated to the main task. Because lots of files were reformatted, I had found it difficult to review the diff. That is my motivation for creating this branch. I expect that only one of the two PRs — either this one or #542 — will eventually be merged into main.

Closing. Since I used git revert to revert a commit in #542, this PR is now redundant.
