The main distinction is a task or contribution vs. a label for an individual (PI, grad student, postdoc).
Around September 9th, @elishawc, I and others met to discuss dataset attribution in NMDC, KBase, ESS-Dive, etc.
There was some discussion about removing "principal investigator" as a credit role. The sentiment was that it could be used as an honorific rather than saying what the person did.
In many cases, the following two roles might be appropriate:
