We have 3 top level categories:

I would expect on selecting one to see sub-categories, but I can't burrow deeper than terrestrial:

What I think you are suggesting is a very interesting idea I had not thought of. When a search contains only one ecosystem bin, move on to the next level in the ecosystem "tree" and split by that. I can look into it.
