I think we can help our users (and even ourselves) if we use consistent, documented language to describe the technologies we use.
The things that appear as columns in DH are called slots or attributes in LinkML. I can't remember whether MIxS has any documented term for them other than "item". The LinkML metamodel specifies many aliases for slot, but I would like to suggest that we use use the smallest subset of those as possible. See the bottom of this page.
Historically, DataHarmonizer called collections of columns, like "MIxS (modified)" sections. Technically, they are slot_groupss in LinkML, but I don't think that's helpful to most people. I would like to avoid calling them "categories" unless that's documented somewhere.
I don't think we (e.g. I) ever documented what the section names "MIxS (modified)" and "MIxS inspired" mean. I just added a column to sheets-for-nmdc-submission-schema where we can add descriptions.
