going to search forces user to sign in #517

Repro:

  1. fresh install of app
  2. click on popular feeds for different time windows
  3. click on hamburger menu
  4. click on search
  5. this takes the user to sign in screen

Search should work without sign-in.

This happens on an iPhone 6 running iOS 11.0.2
