Build Window Install, Uninstall AppX, Launch and Log buttons disabled #9566

Closed las-nsc closed 9 months ago

Overview

In the Build Window, on the Deploy Options Tab, the built packages are listed. Previously these 4 buttons were enabled for each package, but now all of them are disabled. A restart of Unity and Windows hasn't fixed the issue. I've ended up using the device portal to deploy, which is actually better as it shows the progress more clearly, and seems to go faster (but that might be psychological).

Expected behavior

They shouldn't be disabled, and clicking them should do the associated action

Actual behavior

They're disabled, and there's no explanation anywhere why or how to re-enable them.

Steps to reproduce

Set Unity Build options (unfortunately not accessible through the build window) image Set Build window options (of which, 'manifest' are arguably on the wrong tab, as they must be set before unity build) image Use 'Build All', and wait a long time for the AppX to build Enter Device Portal credentials as 'Remote' target. App package listed in 'Deploy', but buttons disabled. image

Unity editor version

Unity 2019.4.21f

Mixed Reality Toolkit release version

MRTK 2.6.0

Addition: if Target Device is set to "Any Device", the Install and Uninstall buttons get enabled (Launch and View Player Log buttons are still disabled). image

If Target Device is set to HoloLens, all 4 buttons are disabled as the original post says.

Thanks @vbandi, that explains what the root cause is. I think the behaviour may be intentional, just unclear and unexpected.

I think it would be better if the MRTK build window completely superceded the unity build window so everything that affects it is contained within the same place. There are various rules about how to correctly configure builds for Hololens, so if the build window could help enforce that it would be more useful. What parts MRTK does take over are clearer than Unity's build window (except the manifest settings which are in the wrong place), it just needs to finish the job.

@las-nsc hmm... I really miss my Launch and View Log buttons... How can I re-enable them if the current behavior is intentional?

las-nsc commented 3 years ago

@vbandi I have seen them working on this version of MRTK/Unity, but you're right there must be another thing that affects whether they work we've not found, and again it might be intentional but is unclear and unexpected.

We appreciate your feedback and thank you for reporting this issue.

Microsoft Mixed Reality Toolkit version 2 (MRTK2) is currently in limited support. This means that Microsoft is only fixing high priority security issues. Unfortunately, this issue does not meet the necessary priority and will be closed. If you strongly feel that this issue deserves more attention, please open a new issue and explain why it is important.

Microsoft recommends that all new HoloLens 2 Unity applications use MRTK3 instead of MRTK2.

Please note that MRTK3 was released in August 2023. It features an all new architecture for developing rich mixed reality experiences and has a minimum requirement of Unity 2021.3 LTS. For more information about MRTK3, please visithttps://www.mixedrealitytoolkit.org.

Thank you for your continued support of the Mixed Reality Toolkit!
