Different desktop content per virtual desktop #10222

πŸ“ Provide a description of the new feature

What is the expected behavior of the proposed feature? What is the scenario this would be used?

Sorry, I just created this account and I don't know how to use it well, I also speak Spanish and I'm translating from google translator, so sorry if it's not understood well. I have made this proposal in the windows comment center, but I think it can be better received here.

"I know the function of virtual desktops, which are quite useful, but I am looking for a way to organize them better. What I propose is that each virtual desktop acts as a new clean desktop, let me explain, that the accesses of desktop 1 are not on desktop 2. Until now, when creating a virtual desktop, all accesses are maintained, but I think it would be a good way to create, for example, a desktop where you have access to work programs, another desktop with games, another with study programs, etc. . The only way to do something similar that I can think of today is to create multiple accounts and log in depending on what you want to use, but it is very slow.

It is something similar to the dashboard system that the Opera browser has. Multiple profiles or workspaces in one."

desktop 2 desktop 1

Other features, which can be found in "Virtual desktop enhancer" (Credits to the programmer), is to name the different desktops or change the background individually and I think adding them here would be nice too.

(Text translated from Spanish by Google Translate)

Regards. If you'd like to see this feature implemented, add a πŸ‘ reaction to this post.

I literally just searched for this 1 minute ago in PowerToys!

I don't really require the different apps on the desktop to be different. I kinda like that they are the same on all desktops, I keep my desktop clean anyway, just the trash bin and my browser.

I would love to see different apps in the TASKBAR, apart from some standard ones I could pin to show on all desktops, such as file explorer, playstore, mail.

Other programs such as all my office/adobe/etc icons could be on the taskbar in my desktop 1 (Work), on desktop 2 (Entertainment) my steam/VLC/etc icons, etc.

Furthermore, what I would truly love is to be able to set the different background on each desktop.

Another feature would be to have a different Fancyzone layout for each different virtual desktop.

Any progress on this issue ?

Would love to see this feature getting added. Im also more interested in having different pinned tasks on different desktops/virtaul desktops. Or in being able to customize each taskbar individual from each other.

For example i dont need the windows start icon on my other monitors.

Ability to pin to taskbar different apps on different desktops would be amazing.

I'm waiting for this to happen for years now. Is it such a monumental effort to get it? A MUST HAVE for power users.

This would make multiple desktops much more useful. +1 from me.

+1 vote here, it would be a really good feature

100%. Shocking this wasn't built in, even on windows 11. But for power toys, surely a must.

Still waiting for this feature to have separate pinned apps on taskbar for different desktops

Commenting to vote support for this (though it should be inbuilt to OS), but adding a use case not mentioned...

Taskbar settings are applied to all virtual desktops. This powertoy may resolve the issue for custom taskbar settings bound to each virtual desktop.

In normal PC use, I need tray icons unhidden (e.g. cloud sync status, chat notifications), pinned apps shortcuts persistent (e.g. browser, email, common apps), and widget shown (weather).

My use case to submit is recording screenshots and video where I do not want to disclose these tools in captures. I manually 'clean' by a) unpinning all apps, and b) changing windows settings to disable widget, search, and hide all running taskbar apps. Once captured, I need to re-enable these again.

If the team is enhancing for custom Virtual Desktops, can custom Taskbar settings persistent per virtual desktop (or a shortcut/snapshot to apply settings) be included in scoping?

Yes, I was swept the network for this feature. And interestingly I found this as the third issue here and requests for more than 10 years. Are the MS has'nt budget to increase this simple feature? To where I sends my CV?

C'mon MS, you can do it.
