PowerToys Run downloads dropbox cloud files #11500

Open v-aravind opened 3 years ago

v-aravind commented 3 years ago

Microsoft PowerToys version

0.37.2

Running as admin

Area(s) with issue?

PowerToys Run

Steps to reproduce

Only valid if you have Dropbox, and you have set some of the files to be 'Online Only' using the Dropbox Smart Sync feature. This means the file is not stored on the computer, just on the cloud, but still appears in the explorer navigation.

In this case, if you type something in PowerToys Run which coincides even in part of the first characters in the name of a file that is set to 'online only', then Dropbox downloads that file immediately.

It appears that PowerToys Run is causing Dropbox to 'load' the file even if it is one of the search results that appear as you type something into the Run search bar.

Windows explorer search function does not do this. It only downloads the file after you click on it to open it, not if it just appears in the search results.

✔️ Expected Behavior

When a file that is saved as 'online only' in Dropbox Smart Sync, it shouldn't be downloaded if it appears as a search result in PowerToys Run, only if it is clicked on and is opened.

❌ Actual Behavior

If a file is set to 'online only' in Dropbox Smart Sync, if the file name matches even in part with a character string typed into PowerToys Run, instead of just displaying the file name in the search results, PowerToys Run makes Dropbox download the file.

@v-aravind I can't reproduce it.

I set 'online only' to all files. What are extensions of files that get downloaded?

v-aravind commented 3 years ago

For sure it happens with Tif image files. ptr db b2 ptr db b1 ptr db b3

Can't reproduce it with tiff images as well. Probably, it has something to do with user settings.

I have tried it multiple times and it is definitely doing that for tif images. and also for jpeg images. I am attaching another screenshot. Maybe it has something to do with me having installed some specific image viewers? Can you try it with Irfanview and QuickLook installed? Screenshot 2021-05-29 084640

Hi, just wondering if anyone had managed to reproduce this, or if there is anything I can do to help replicate. Thanks

@v-aravind I couldn't reproduce it. We use Windows Search so the behaviour should be the same as in the start menu. Can you confirm that when you search from the start menu items are not downloaded?
