Shift key stays "pressed" #16487

Open TasTraceur opened 2 years ago

TasTraceur commented 2 years ago

Microsoft PowerToys version

"0.55.2"

Running as admin

Area(s) with issue?

Keyboard Manager

Steps to reproduce

image

With this configuration, on a Spanish keyboard, pressing AltGr (which translates to Ctrl(left) + Alt ( right)) + "9" does not always work well to put the character ">" and when it works, the Shift key remains pressed virtually .

✔️ Expected Behavior

That when I press Alt Gr + 9 the character ">" is put.

❌ Actual Behavior

It doesn't work very often, and when it does, the Shift key virtually gets stuck.

Other Software

No response

Don't have a spanish keyboard to give this a try, but the getting stuck issue seems like https://github.com/microsoft/PowerToys/issues/17035

Does changing Shift to Shift(Left) help at all? /needinfo

TasTraceur commented 2 years ago

Yes, it sound similar than https://github.com/microsoft/PowerToys/issues/17035.

I tested this configuration:

And the result is the same.

And about the keyboard. You dont need a Spanish keyboard, you only need to change the keyboard language:

And then, your "Alt Right" is the "AltGr" in Spanish keyboard.

It still happens with Release v0.62.1, but something has changed, the Shift key was virtually stucked when I opened the issue but when I pressed the Shift key, it works again, and now, it doesn't works. I need to use another shortkey for use again de Alt Gr + 9.

TasTraceur commented 2 years ago

In v0.64 works again like in v0.55 with the Shift key stucked.

TasTraceur commented 1 year ago

It still persists in v0.67.1

Both my shift and ctrl keys randomly get stuck. I can 'unstuck' them by holding down the shift or ctrl keys for a few seconds. It happens roughly ever 20-30 minutes throughout the day. Sometimes I can go for a few hours without it happening. It's hard to pinpoint what causes it, though I feel like it happens after a quick succession of (modifier) key strokes and mouse clicks. When I exit PowerToys it no longer occurs.

I'm running Windows 11 (22H2). Sticky keys, Filter keys and Toggle keys are all off in settings.

I'm using the following utilities in v0.68.1:

I'm gonna try and switch these off one by one, but it'll be a slow process as it happens intermittently. Found this issue and figured I'd report it just in case.

In my case I can reproduce the issue each time when using the "Paste as Plan Text" function. When changing the key mapping sometimes another key also get stuck, but the shift key always seems to get stuck.

To get it unstuck, I can either press it twice or hold it for 1 or 2 seconds.

FYI, some of the combinations I tried Ctrl+Shit+V Ctrl+Alt+V Windows+Alt+V

Came here to report the same, but I'm glad there are already a few issues raised.

I've experienced this in the past weeks, on both Windows 10 and Windows 11 with PowerToys installed, so I assumed this wouldn't be due to Windows updates, but instead due to PowerToys, since there are some functions there that handle keyboard shortcuts.

This seems to be happening with both Shift (#16487) and Ctrl (#17035), sometimes getting stuck, so I have to press them again to "resolve" this issue when that happens.

I just installed Power Toys just for the keyboard manager. I set the short cuts using ctrl + shift + . When I use the right ctrl and right shift I will get a stuck virtual shift key that releases when the right shift is pressed. Other combinations of left & right ctrl and shift do not product this error.
