Slowdown and errant behaviour using video editing apps #17717

Open timrawe opened 2 years ago

timrawe commented 2 years ago

Microsoft PowerToys version

0.57.2

Running as admin

Area(s) with issue?

General

Steps to reproduce

Whenever I try to use the video editing apps Shotcut and OpenShot I find they begin to degrade in performance (become very slow to use, to the point of being unusable).

I have tried this on both my home PC and work one with identical performance issues. As soon as I quit PowerToys I can run them as normal, with no performance degredation.

✔️ Expected Behavior

Generally PowerToys has been an excellent app to keep running, and it is only since recently having a lot of video editing to do that this problem has emerged. I would expect (and can see when PowerToys is stopped running) the video editing apps to allow scrolling through video footage, allowing edits to quickly be made etc.

❌ Actual Behavior

It is as though the video apps gradually slow down, functions become very slow to respond to input and eventually the app's display basically freezes for increasingly longer periods of time.

Other Software

I run Dropbox, Degoo and OneDrive sync apps, Teamviewer, NextPVR, a Radeon graphics card app and MSI Fast boot (but it is not enabled to do anything as such).

Can you try disabling PowerToys 1 by 1 in the Settings to see if we can identify which PowerToy might be causing this? Thanks, in advance. /needinfo

Hi Jaime

I will test it out over the Easter weekend and will let you know the results.

Many thanks

Good morning Jaime

I have tried testing things as requested. I tried switching off all modules within PowerToys and testing with a video editing app (Shotcut) but to no avail. The app struggled to even open a video file and seemed paralysed, unable to scroll through even a few frames of footage.

I then exited the app ( it was so screwed up this had to be via Task Manager), then completely closed down PowerToys and lauched Shotcut again. Iimmediately the video editing app worked as expected. It would appear from this situation that something intrinsic in PowerToys causes the problem.

I then tested with another video app called OpenShot. This gradually degraded whilst trying to edit a 1 hour video, getting to the point of unresponsiveness. It performed slightly better than Shotcut but there wasn't much between them.

In neither case have I altered any default settings in the video editor apps.

Hi @timraw , gave it a try on Shotcut for some minutes trying to edit a video, but was unable to replicate the issue. Shotcut kept working as expected. Are there some steps you could indicate to try and reproduce it on our side? Perhaps some sample video with a repetitive task on that video that is able to see this behavior happen? /needinfo

Hi Jaime

Thanks so much for the real life test. I have added a Dropbox link https://www.dropbox.com/s/hvxniqgna0e9979/The%20Michelangelo%20Code.mp4?dl=0 to some footage (SD not HD) to enable a test.

All the best

Thank you! Downloading. Which operations should I do to the video with Shotcut to replicate the issue? (I don't know the first thing about video editing or this software)

timrawe commented 2 years ago

Hi Jamie

So usually I am editing content for school, and in the case of this video I would cut out the overspill recording and the adverts and export using standard settings to an MP4 file. The issue would kick in as I scrolled through content and made edits, gradually slowing the app (but not the rest of the PC) to a standstill. This was true for my home PC (Core i7) and my work one (a Xeon workstation).

Thanks again for all your help
