Update: was able to uninstall via command line: wmic:root\cli>product where "name like 'Power%'" uninstall

Went back to PowerToysSetup-0.15.2-x64 and all is working as normal

Currently having the same issue with FancyZones not working with this update. I've created my zones and hold shift when dragging but instead of the zone lighting up, my window I'm dragging just goes transparent.

Silun commented 4 years ago

Same issue - the layout just won't be saved and fancyzones doesn't do anything except making windows transparent while dragging with shift. If I open the dialog to set the layout again immediately after selecting one, it will already have reset.

Edit: To be clear, I also had the issue with uninstalling PowerToys via Programs & Features. However uninstalling it does work via the modern settings app list. Version 0.15.2-x64 works correctly for me.

@MannyQED @LiveFastCyYoung @Silun later today we will release 0.16.1 with some fixes.

If the problem persists with 0.16.1, please upload this file:

C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\PowerToys\FancyZones\zones-settings.json

Be aware it contains the app history section (is the list of apps that you have zoned), feel free to edit the file to remove the app history section for privacy reasons. When you upload it, change the extension to .txt or zip it otherwise GittHub will not accept it. Thank you.

MannyQED commented 4 years ago

@enricogior thank you

enricogior commented 4 years ago

In case, in order to avoid to edit the file to remove the app zone history, you can:

In this case the app zone history will be empty, and the zones-settings.json file will only have the data important to investigate the bug.

ion-elgreco commented 4 years ago

Same. For me its still broken, even in 0.16.1

enricogior commented 4 years ago

@ion-elgreco can you try the steps above and upload the zones-settings.json file? Thanks.

I installed this program 2 days ago. It worked fine for 1 day, but now today it doesn't work anymore for some reason. Same symptoms, I drag the window and the custom zones I created don't show anymore on screen

Yeah, same. It works fine for a while and then suddenly it stopped working. No error message and nothing peculiar happened, that I would be able to notice. Uninstalling, removing, reinstalling and nothing helps to bring back its functionality. The software won't properly uninstall, because it leaves constantly backup files behind.

@ion-elgreco in the other issue you said the FZ editor wasn't opening, here the issue is not the the editor doesn't open, but that the FZ applied layout/template is not working. Can you please clarify what is your issue and only post here if you can open the editor but then the zones don't activate. Thanks.

enricogior commented 4 years ago

@vohzi if you open the FZ editor again and select and apply one of the existing template does it still not work?

Ah sorry, I misunderstood his post. For me I can't open the editor or change templates, win + ` shortcut doesn't work. I see it sometimes loading in my mouse pointer, but then nothing happens.

It still doesn't work. I tried. I even tried deleting the .json file and creating new profiles, to no avail.

enricogior commented 4 years ago

@vohzi can you upload the file:

You need to zip it or to change the extension to .txt. otherwise Github will not accept it. Thanks.

zones-settings.txt

enricogior commented 4 years ago

@vohzi I don't see anything wrong with the settings, but let's try this:

  1. quit PowerToys
  2. delete the zones-settings.json file
  3. restart PowerToys
  4. create a custom layout with one zone and apply it
  5. try to use it
  6. upload the zones-settings.json file

Thanks.

@vohzi FZ fails to identify your current monitor. You are running FZ on your PC, not in a remote session or in a virtual machine, correct? Can you provide some information on the hardware? Is it a desktop PC with an external monitor or is it a laptop? Also, have you already updated to 0.16.1?

vohzi commented 4 years ago

I indeed have a receiver in between my PC and my HDTV linked together with HDMI I don't use this app within remote desktops, however I do use windows remote desktop on this PC to access other computers that don't have FZ installed.

Here's my full config :

Actually the update to 1.16.1 seems to have fixed it ... for now. I will see if it still works the next days. Thanks for your help !

enricogior commented 4 years ago

@vohzi can you please re-upload the zones-settings.json file? It will allow to confirm if you were effected by the the bug we fixed in 0.16.1. Thanks.

MannyQED commented 4 years ago

So I just tried this morning with PowerToysSetup-0.16.1-x64 and everything seems to be working as normal so far... Thank you

enricogior commented 4 years ago

@vohzi it's confirmed, you had a similar problem as in https://github.com/microsoft/PowerToys/issues/1821 even if in your case it wan't the remote desktop but the receiver (different devices generating a similar device id that we were not processing correctly)

@MannyQED I'm assuming something similar was also happening to you, so I'm closing this issue for now as a duplicate of https://github.com/microsoft/PowerToys/issues/1821 (as explained above, the bug is the same for different scenarios)

Thank you for helping identifying the problem and sorry for the regression.
