Cannot check for updates - Network Error reported #22989

Microsoft PowerToys version

0.65.0

Installation method

Microsoft Store

Running as admin

Yes

Area(s) with issue?

Settings

Steps to reproduce

Found that the PowerToys setting page would not allow updates as reported: "Network Error" (See screenshot). This happened over a week ago. Most recently I installed Kali Linux on WSL2 (though WSL2 has been installed for some time). To get connected to the outside world from Linux I am bridging the WIFI connection to WSL (See screenshot).

The problem only stopped and could update again after removing the bridged virtual network connection in Hyper-V and rebooting.

✔️ Expected Behavior

All other network connections work OK - Windows Update, email, browsing, Microsoft Store etc.

Expected that the PowerToys update could be checked OK as well.

❌ Actual Behavior

When the PowerToys update check button is selected it shows the error as seen in the screenshot. Powertoys_settings

Other Software

Using Hyper-V Manager version: 10.0.22621.1 Hyper-V_version

I have the same issue and it is also present after manually updating from 0.65.0 to 0.66.0.

For what it is worth, one of the early releases of Windows 22H2 (I don't subscribe to insiders builds) had the same issue across the entire OS - no connection could be created in any app until disabling Hyper-V. I ended up rolling back that update. I tried 22H2 again today and the OS-wide issue is no longer present. Might be a stretch but its possible that someone familiar with the details of the 22H2 issue could help identify the issue in PowerToys.

Just had a system tray note that v0.66.0 is available. Installed it from the system tray notice and it installed OK. However the message about a network error is still present. NetErrorStill

I also have this issue with v0.66.0, and also have HyperV virtual switch - where I have a couple Hyper-V VM's running, and also have WSL2 installed. None of that has changed recently however. The only recent updates (besides PowerToys) are via Windows update for Windows 10:

All other apps that use networking on my computer seem to still be working other than PowerToys update check...

I can confirm that with the latest PowerToys version and I'm pretty sure it wasn't an issue before. Windows 11, Hyper-V with External bridge. When I remove the bridge, the update check works like it should. The moment I create the bridge, it's that "Network error" message again.

I am seeing the same behavior on v0.68.1 running on Windows 10 22H2, with Hyper-V with an External Bridge PowerToys shows "Network error. Please try again later" if I remove the external bridge then PowerToys can check for updates as expected.
