That's odd I did include a bug report, reposting it here. PowerToysReport_2024-03-20-11-44-31.zip

I can't really speak on whether or not it keeps my gaming laptop awake, because I don't let it sleep when plugged in, but I will say that Awake's "Keep screen on" has absolutely no affect on my LG 48GQ900-B (via DisplayPort). With Awake enabled, the display will fall asleep in 5 mins if you go AFK.

The auto-dimming and sleep anti-features are some of the biggest complaints about this display actually. There are NO SETTINGS to adjust it built into the display, which is pretty gay. Any sort of workaround for this would be great.

Yeah this Awake feature doesn't work AT ALL on my laptop, it still goes to sleep. Seems like it's broken.

I added my log already if you scroll up.

I'm having this issue after 0.81.0. It was working just fine until 0.81.0 for me, but now my pc goes to sleep after whatever time I have my pc set to auto-sleep.

SD777x commented 4 months ago

Almost 3 months later and no one has even looked at my log files? Is there any progress on this, it continues to be an issue and I really need something I can rely on. Alternatively does anyone have another app suggestion which actually works to keep the PC awake?

PS: Please don't tell me to upload the log files, they are right there a few posts above.

I have similar issue. For a while now, My Laptop goes to sleep at night when it is set to never go to Sleep. When in that state I cannot wake it up. I have to do a hard reboot to restart which was the main reason I did not want it to go to Sleep. Installed Awake in Hope to solve the issue but no dice. Issue started about a year ago. @JmarcZ @Tman1314 @SD777x when Awake is set to keep awake indefinitely, can you please post the output of powercfg /requests (needs an elevated prompt)?

JmarcZ commented 3 months ago

HI Den

Here it is: [cid:4c57894b-0f0a-4a6a-a3c2-44a64e019125]

Every night My screen goes to Lock after 3 hours( power profile). But sometimes after, the Computer seems to want to go to Hibernate. I found the Unit locked and and I am Unable to get it to resume. I have to do a hard boot to restart. In the event Log, I get message that the Previous shutdown was unExpected(obviously)...

Thanks @JmarcZ - and the output of powercfg /requests is while PowerToys Awake is running with indefinite keep-awake set? Because the output points to the fact that the PowerToys.Awake.exe process did not issue any requests for power mode setup.

I honestly gave up on this useless (no offense intended) app after months of waiting for a response, it simply doesn't work across the 3 PCs I've tested it on and I have an important workflow where I can't sit around for months on end waiting for a solution (or simply to get a dev response). For others who need a solid solution I found that keeping an old PS4 controller physically connected to USB keeps the PC from going to sleep!

tedstriker2 commented 3 months ago

Same problem here. I'm attaching the bug report zip. PowerToysReport_2024-08-01-07-37-00.zip

Also, here's the output of "powercfg /requests":

image

I'm on Microsoft Windows 11 Education. I have sleep entirely disabled in the power plan under settings and the power plan under the old Control Panel. I've made changes to Group Policy Sleep settings suggested in another bug thread to "allow applications to prevent automatic sleep". Nothing works, the computer will not stay awake. When I come to work, I'm greeted by a logjam of scheduled tasks suddenly trying to run at the same time - I need them to run at their scheduled times, and the "Wake the computer" settings in Windows 11 are just as cursed as everything else related to sleep. I even tried to disable Modern Standby in the computer BIOS, and it still goes into Modern Standby relentlessly. I'm tearing my hair out here.

The only thing that seems to work is playing music - that'll keep going while the computer is locked.

TheJoeFin commented 3 months ago

@tedstriker2 can you provide the make and model of the device you are using?

@JmarcZ @tedstriker2 have you updated to the latest PowerToys to see if the issue is resolved with the new Awake?

@dend Yes, I have PowerToys 0.83.0. Since my last post I applied a registry patch to disable Modern Standby, and that fixed my issues with Windows Task Scheduler. However, it seems that Awake is still not keeping my computer awake (aside from running tasks). Here's the Event Log from when I started work this morning:

Hi, Was up to 0.82.1. Just downloaded 0.83.0. Will report back.

dend commented 3 months ago

@tedstriker2 from the powercfg /requests output that you are showing, Awake is correctly grabbing a hold on the system to keep it awake, but seems like something else is interfering. Is this a laptop or a desktop? What power plan do you have enabled for it?

tedstriker2 commented 3 months ago

@dend It's a laptop - like I said before, a "HP EliteBook 650 15.6 inch G10 Notebook PC". I have a custom power plan with sleep disabled whether it's plugged in or charging. I disabled sleep through the control panel and the newer "Settings" interface. If you look at my earlier posts in this thread, I've tried disabling sleep six ways from Sunday. Playing music keeps the computer awake - nothing else works. Maybe I could play a mp3 on a loop with the volume turned down instead of using the Awake PowerToy.

As you can see from the powercfg documentation, the /requests argument should identify everything that "prevent the computer from automatically powering off the display or entering a low-power sleep mode." In your screenshot, Awake correctly issues a SYSTEM hold, which should prevent your system from going to sleep.

Something else is interfering with the request and putting the machine to sleep anyway. Could be something specific to laptops, but I haven't seen that repro-d on my machine. I will have to investigate that further in future releases.

armpogart commented 2 months ago

Not working for me on 1 laptop (both on battery and plugged in) and working on another (older laptop) with PowerToys 0.83.0. Laptop's full model that is not working on is Asus Zenbook Pro 16X OLED UX7602BZ-DS99T. powercfg output when Awake is on and not working (going to sleep, locking screen).

The only thing I think this new laptop has that can probably interfere with Awake is Microsoft Hello with IR camera and Presence Sensing (it detects when I go away and locks the screen and unlocks automatically when I come back to it). The settings look like the following: image

I haven't tried to disable that and test Awake, but it may give you idea why Awake doesn't work in my case.

Experiencing this issue with v.0.84.1 - it worked OK for me previously (I can't remember quite which version).

Set to always stay awake, infinity icon showing on taskbar icon. However still goes to sleep.

Bug report attached.

@EDIflyer seems like Awake correctly grabs a hold of the system. Are you running this on a laptop or desktop?

EDIflyer commented 1 month ago

Hi @dend this is on a desktop. I have tried disabling and re-enabling it and for now it seems to be behaving more as expected - not sure if a setting perhaps didn't transfer over when there was one of the recent upgrades to PowerToys?

camilaValentin commented 1 week ago

Hi, I have the same issue, after last update the Awake function stopped working
