It could be due to Windows Store updates WSL2 without user's content. You may check the update history in Windows Store. At least if happens to me quite some times.

It's not listed in recent updates in the store app, while updates from before Friday are.
@magus424: How exactly did you split the zips ?
If the log zip is too big for GH you can always store on OneDrive / Google Drive

I just used 7zip's split feature; I was able to open them again in 7zip when they were named as .001/.002/.003 by opening the first one through its UI.
I can see about getting it into Google Drive or such later if needed.
Hmm 7zip seems able do open the zip, but it fails to extract logs.etl
, which is the file I'd be interested in. If you can upload the full zip somewhere that would probably make things easier
Stumbled across #5895 after my WSL instance crashed again today and now the entire disk is corrupt; not sure if related.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1dCGoZvrysGqmSKHeWj1bPTbENFkdc6nK/view?usp=sharing should be the full un-split zip
Thank you @magus424. The logs you shared shows that WSL restarted because of a kernel panic.
This specific error could be a result of memory corruption. Could you try to run a memory check on your machine to make sure that this isn't caused by a hardware issue ?

Sure, would the Windows Memory Diagnostic app work for that or is there a better tool I should use? (is memtest86 still around? heh)
Whichever of those is easier for you !
Finally had time to run Windows Memory Diagnostic last night and it reports no errors.
Assigning to @chessturo for further investigation
Windows Version
Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.22631.4169]
WSL Version
2.2.4.0
Are you using WSL 1 or WSL 2?
Kernel Version
5.15.153.1-2
Distro Version
Ubuntu 24.04
Other Software
Docker Desktop 4.34.2 (167172) -- not sure if related, but it is in use, and is often my first sign something happened
Repro Steps
I wish I knew. I'll just be going about my day using it normally and the terminal will die and I'll get a popup from Docker Desktop saying the WSL backend shutdown unexpectedly.
Expected Behavior
Expected no crash
Actual Behavior
It crashed
Diagnostic Logs
It happened earlier today so I started grabbing logs just in case and it did happen again later while it was collecting. Had to split the zip into 3 parts for it to be allowed to upload. (and had to add an extra
.zip
so the upload would allow it)WslLogs-2024-09-27_14-40-25.zip.001.zip WslLogs-2024-09-27_14-40-25.zip.002.zip WslLogs-2024-09-27_14-40-25.zip.003.zip
While opening this ticket, I saw the info on enabling crash logs, so I've done that for the future as well, but nothing yet.
