WSL2 and ThrottleStop are not compatible with each other on Windows 11 #7396

Open jacobdang opened 3 years ago

jacobdang commented 3 years ago

Windows Build Number

Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.22000.176]

WSL Version

Kernel Version

5.10.43

Distro Version

Ubuntu-20.04

Other Software

ThrottleStop 9.4

Repro Steps

  1. Turn on WSL2 and install Ubuntu 20.04
  2. Install ThrottleStop 9.4
  3. Open the ThrottleStop application. Click the 'FIVR" button. Apply CPU Core and CPU Cache voltage settings by adjusting the Offset Voltage in the FIVR control section accordingly.

Expected Behavior

The CPU Core and CPU Cache voltage offset values are adjusted and applied according to the FIVR settings, which results in a successful CPU undervolting operation.

Actual Behavior

  1. The CPU Core and CPU Cache voltage offset values are unchanged and unmodified. CPU undervolting cannot be done.
  2. If the Virtual Machine Platform feature is disabled, ThrottleStop 9.4 voltage control feature will work again. However, Ubuntu 20.04 will refuse to boot up.

This is a critical issue for some users like myself, as my laptop CPU runs very hot without CPU undervolting, and I also need WSL2 for my work.

This issue is not yet triaged despite being reported four months ago. Can any WSL2 maintainer take a look at this issue? Thanks.
