whitespace consistency

• tabs and spaces: most of the code uses spaces for indentation, but some used tabs (and some even had mixed spaces and tabs). I converted the code to use spaces for indentation only
• removed trailing whitespace at end of lines
• added spaces where missing after commas and colons and before and after operators
