What happened?
When rendered in italic, the 'y' character is too wide or off-centered, and doesn't fit in its character cell. It gets clipped on the right:
See the right of 'y' getting clipped at the left border of 'b': This is using the standard 12pt at 100% (96 DPI) font size.
Note that this looks like a single pixel snapping to grid issue. When rendered at larger sizes, the issue is not visible, such as here at 200%:
To me, it looks like the 'y' is a bit off-centered, shifted slightly to the right, but it could also be a width issue with its design.
