Steps to Reproduce:

1. Add host and connect to it using ssh extension
2. Open up any folder inside home directory

I would greatly appreciate any help/clarity. Thank you!

By the way, this is a university server I am connecting to (so I do not have admin permissions). I tried installing different versions of the remote ssh extension (including pre-release) and nothing seemed to change. I also tried killing vscode-server (through VSCode and manually by killing the process on the university server) and rm -rf .vscode-server, but nothing seemed to change.

Also tried setting

Given this is such a basic IO call, I suspect that the entire connection to the remote is flawed. Maybe you have an idea Rob or could try to reproduce.

There are many suspicious permission denied errors that make me wonder whether the folder you open as workspace is readable at all by the user you use to log in to the remote.

Any chance you could test this setup with a different server? Are we certain that the SSH connection has sufficient rights to read files and folders? I.e. does it work from a SSH terminal to list files of a folder and read them?

The weird thing is that it works initially with remote ssh 0.70 (vscode stable): https://youtu.be/dN1_bRgN28Q. If I try to reconnect (after quitting), I get the same error. I used to be able to connect to this server in 2021 (I used the extension for almost all of my university work), but this error seems new.

@Shri333 if it works with 0.7.0 initially, can you figure out what the first version is where it fails right on startup?

The version thing is pretty weird. I don't know of anything in the SSH extension that could cause a bug like this. If you got to this point, the frontend is able to talk to the server and extension host.

In the broken state, can you do anything? Can you open a terminal, open an individual file, do a search?

Terminal surprisingly works. If I try to create any file, I get a permission denied error.

That indicates to me an issue with the SSH connection and not with VSCode. I.e. somehow the user account that is associated with the connection does not have sufficient permissions to access files. I am still surprised though that the connection can be established and the file picker shows you a list of files.

Yeah, it reproduces with all folders under my home directory. The ssh connection through terminal works fine: I can access all files, create new files, delete files, and update files.

Sorry, it sounds like this might be some sort of exotic situation with permissions. If it is really consistently working with 0.70 but not newer versions, you could install the intermediate versions and let me know which was the first one to break it?

Right click the Remote-SSH extension and click "Switch to pre-release". Then, "Install another version"

Oh yeah, also older versions of the remote-ssh extension will not work with the latest vscode. You will have to test with a version of vscode from a couple months ago. You can get download links off our release notes.

By the way, whenever any error happens, I am always able to kill the server on the host using the command palette (so I am not sure why I am not able to connect through the extension to view folders/files).

I don't understand, now it seems like we logged in but our install script never ran. That's an entirely new issue right?

Yeah, it is a new issue, but it is appearing with that specific ssh version (remote-ssh@0.71.202210715). The latest ssh version doesn't have this issue (but has the previous issue we were discussing before with the workspace error).

Right. Maybe there was a bug in that version, if it was working in earlier versions
