I've only ever seen a notification on the settings cog in the lower left of VS Code - Insiders Edition (Bottom of the Activity Panel) when there was an update.
But (just) today a clock initially displays, then the number 1 - as if there was an update, but:
1) closing the app does not trigger an update.
2) clicking on "Check for Updates..." just brings up a dialog saying "no updates are available".
I do not see any other indicators of 'items needing my attention' elsewhere in the cog's context menu. Hmmm.
