TypeScript and Javascript themes not working

I am not entirely certain how this happened -- I've been using VScode for years and this has never happened. I even removed an older theme extension. I also tried starting vscode with all extensions disabled using the flag listed in the github issue template -- no dice. I simply restarted my computer and now the typescript and javascript files (99%+ of all of my projects) have half colored syntax that can't be modified by switching theme etc.. It seems like a bug under the hood
