Spelling mistakes across many hover tips #201110

Closed ghost closed 10 months ago

ghost commented 10 months ago

Does this issue occur when all extensions are disabled?: Yes/No Yes

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Hover over a syntax in HTML language
  2. Read the tooltips

When hovering over a syntax for HTML, many tooltips have the same spelling mistake. image

"if an html" is of course not correct English. If a HTML is.

This is present in at least 5 tooltip windows. The person writing these tooltips many years ago perhaps was not native speaker and spoke with instead a breathy vowel sound for H. such as "aitch".

Thanks for creating this issue! It looks like you may be using an old version of VS Code, the latest stable release is 1.85.1. Please try upgrading to the latest version and checking whether this issue remains.

Happy Coding!

According to https://english.stackexchange.com/questions/25742/is-it-supposed-to-be-a-html-or-an-html, an HTML is correct.

I'm baffled... that 12 year old stackexchange post by a random user is English phoneme quality law?! You cannot say "aitch" for H, it may be a common fool's mistake, but a fool's mistake still!

ghost commented 10 months ago

perhaps I should add that I speak English

aeschli commented 10 months ago

If I get this right, both are correct, it depends how you pronounce HTML.

The HTML spec also uses an: https://html.spec.whatwg.org/

It is a very common mistake. So common infact for people to be lazy in their speech and to not pronounce H correctly. Please refer to page 124 where vowel quality phoneme is coupled beside latin glyphs for A, H, G. H should not, and must not, be pronounced like a fool of the world.

Try going about your life saying I for high, or yper for hyper, or ello for hello, etc etc. H is H, not aitch.

crazydef commented 10 months ago

The Oxford English Dictionary says Aitch is the correct spelling of the name of the letter H.
