vscode sign in to sync settings does nothing

I am on Ubuntu 22.04 running latest vscode everything was fine then I changed my linux password and rebooted ... then when I launch vscode it says

Sign in to Sync Settings(1)

when I click on this it does nothing and it offers zero guidance on how to get out of this mess

work around ... I removed file
