I'm encountering this issue as well. After a small amount of digging I found that after running snap revert code the issue no longer exists, so it seems that it was introduced in the latest update. Hopefully that can work as a temporary workaround for people.

jvanatta commented 4 months ago

Same here. v 1.90.1 was lagging, reverting to 1.90.0 fixed. Ubuntu 20.

noahajohn commented 4 months ago

I can also confirm an identical experience for me. I updated yesterday and VS Code became very laggy. I first tried disabling all extensions, but that did not fix it. I found this thread and reverted the snap and normal performance is back. Specs of working snap from Help-> "About":

Version: 1.90.0 Commit: 89de5a8d4d6205e5b11647eb6a74844ca23d2573 Date: 2024-06-04T19:43:07.605Z Electron: 29.4.0 ElectronBuildId: 9593362 Chromium: 122.0.6261.156 Node.js: 20.9.0 V8: 12.2.281.27-electron.0 OS: Linux x64 6.5.0-35-generic snap

Another one here. Reverted to 1.89

VSCode is unusable in remote terminals. Host on 24.04, remotes on 22.04.

LucasNovaes2016 commented 4 months ago

Same issue here (Ubuntu 20.04.6). I reverted VS Code to version 1.90.0 and it seems fine now.

oxismailxo commented 4 months ago

same problem here VSCode version: 1.90.1, I reverted to 1.90.0 OS: Ubuntu 24.04 LTS

Azmisov commented 4 months ago

Same problem, Ubuntu 22.04.4.

Just moving the cursor with all extensions disabled:

riccardomel commented 4 months ago

Same here after upgrade, using snap on Ubuntu 22.04.4, revert the snap fix the issue for now.

deepak1556 commented 4 months ago

Merging to https://github.com/microsoft/vscode/issues/212494, please follow the issue for updates. This is a side effect of workaround introduced to address crash on startup, it will be addressed in the next release 1.90.2.

Also disabling the GPU (code --disable-gpu .) removes the lag for me.

it's the same for me, just download an older version because the most recent doesn't seems compatible with ubuntu 24.04

It got fixed today after updating to the latest code version 1.90.2 (installed using Ubuntu's snap)

Super laggy, even for a simple copy-past (a progress circle appears). That wasn't the case before.

Version: 1.90.2 (system setup) Commit: 5437499feb04f7a586f677b155b039bc2b3669eb Date: 2024-06-18T22:34:26.404Z Electron: 29.4.0 ElectronBuildId: 9728852 Chromium: 122.0.6261.156 Node.js: 20.9.0 V8: 12.2.281.27-electron.0 OS: Windows_NT x64 10.0.19045

On 1.90.2 I am experiencing very high CPU usage from VS Code. With many (sometimes 100+) powershell.exe sub-processes, idk if anyone else is experiencing this and if it is related to this original issue?
