Proposal: Single picker for Teams channels, chats, group chats, and meetings

Description

When users 'share' in Teams, they're using a mix of channels, chats, group chats, and meetings. Each of these contexts supports features like tabs, messaging, and other integrations. However, the channel picker control only lets users pick channels. By having a single picker across all the 'collaboration places' in Teams, apps can deliver more compelling experiences.

Rationale

• In Teams channels, chats/group chats, and meetings are places to collaborate. It should be easy to list and pick them.
• Having dedicated pickers for each of these places in teams results in clunky user experiences. Apps would need to force users to choose a type, then load the appropriate control.
• Maintaining multiple controls is harder for consuming apps especially if contracts are not identical. App authors would need to do extra work to support each collaboration place.
• In future, if new collaboration contexts are added, a single control would be able to support them as well.

Preferred Solution

• A single picker control enables a 'send to teams dialog' to be built. The user types a name. The picker suggest recent channels, chats, group chats, or meetings the user has / is participating in. The user can quickly send a link or rich adaptive card to the collaboration context. E.g. during a meeting a user hears a question, then responded by opening the app, pressing the app built share experience, and immediately sends the message to the meeting.
• A single picker controls enables applications to add a tab to a channel/chat/meeting
• A user can type a user name into the picker, if there isn't a 1:1 chat with that user, a new one can be created by the application and a message sent to them.
• A user can type multiple user names into the picker, if there isn't a group chat with those users, a new one can be created by the application and a message sent to them.

At the moment, this is not something we're likely to prioritize. That being said, the Graph Toolkit is an open source project and we'll be happy to support and review if you want to contribute to its codebase! In the meantime, we will be closing this issue. Thanks!
