Noobie needs guidance #24

I'm completely ignorant on how to use cbloader. I play LFR and would love to
use cbloader to bring in the Essentials and other new books that are available.
I run cbloader, that I placed into my CB directory, but only get the old db
(e.g., I can't located Superior Will).

Where are the rule updates that people are writing?

How do I download them? How do I use (load) them?

I recently purchased a new Win7 computer and can only use the Silverlight web
ap. Yes, I do have a paid subscription with WOTC. Like most people, I
strongly prefer the old computer version to the alpha version web ap program.
Is there a way to port the old CB with cbloader into my new computer, without
hand entering all the registry entries?

In any case, thank you for your patience.

Hi there,

We cannot provide information about how to locate copywritten rules updates. We
have no affiliation with those who create them. We only support homebrew usage
of cbloader. Some of which is located here:
http://cbloadercontentwiki.wikispaces.com/Mod+Links

As for your second question, yes CBLoader can help you move your character
builder between machines that you own (in fact, copying registry entries is
insufficent on it's own, something like cbloader is required). If you run it
with the -r [filename] option it will generate a keyfile in your character
builder directory. You can then run cbloader with the -k [filename] option on
your new machine to bypass the registry. We are working with making this
process easier for non-technical users. So keep an eye out for future updates.
You can find details about the command-line options at

WRT your first paragraph, can you point to a location which points to a
location? You pointed to "cbloadercontentwiki.wikispaces.com/Mod+Links"
but all I see are custom home game features (e.g., Codex Venenorum). I
realize that you can't directly tell me where I could find the
Essentials content (I don't need Dark Sun - for the last 2 years I've
only played LFR), but can you give me a hint? I saw something about SA,
but I don't know where to look.

WRT your second paragraph, if I understand you correctly, I would first
create FileName.out on my old machine. Do I then move all files from
'c:\Program Files (x86)\Wizards of the Coast' directory of my old
computer into my new machine? Finally would I then run "cbloader -k
FileName.out" as a batch file? Also could I circumvent the batch file
by putting cbloader onto my desktop, then change the
properties/shortcut/ Target to include "C:\Program Files (x86)\Wizards
of the Coast\cbloader.exe -k Filename.out"?

Yes, create a shortcut to CBLoader, and change the target to include the
parameters. That's probably better than a batch file, in fact.

I followed the direction and got the following error:

12/19/10 7:32:52 PM - INFO: Extracting C:\Users\Allen
Fleishman\AppData\Roaming\CBLoader\combined.dnd40.main
12/19/10 7:32:52 PM - ERROR:

open the log file? (y/n)

I ran the file either following the cmd option (after changing the directory to
the CharBuilderFull_p directory with the -k Filename.out option), as well as
from a shortcut. The shortcut did not allow any added entries after the file
name.

When I appended -k Filename.out to the properties/Target it said:
The name 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Wizards of the Coast\Character
Builder\CharBuilderFull_p\CBLoader.exe -k FileName.out' specified in the Target
box is not valid. Make sure the path and file name are correct.

The shortcut target should be
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Wizards of the Coast\Character
Builder\CharBuilderFull_p\CBLoader.exe" -k FileName.out
with the quotes before to -k.

Yes, that fixes the target issue, but I still get the error when I
execute cbloader:

If this is the problem I think it is, then I'd like to point out that the error
message is somewhat unhelpful.

Let's verify you correctly set things up:
On your old computer, the one with the Character Builder fully installed and
working, 1) You ran 'CBLoader.exe -r FileName.out'
2) You then copied the entire CharBuilderFull_p folder across to your new
computer.
3) You are running 'CBloader.exe -k FileName.out'

I have a feeling that you may not have a keyfile on the new computer.

Actually, from the type-o of 'appropriat' in the error message, it looks like
you are using an old version of cbloader. Please make sure to download the
latest version of the cbloader. A number of bugs around this feature were
resolved in the past few releases.
