GMail: Change the default mail format (plain/html) for a specific contact #38

This is really an enhancement request.

I like using the Rich Text mail when I can. I think it makes my mail
easier to read (URL linking) and gives me some freedom to express
myself (bold, italics, color, etc.) However, there are a couple of
people (and mailing lists) that don't like Rich Text email, some of
them bounce my messages because of it.

My question is, how can I have my mail default to plain text when I
compose messages to certain contacts? It's a real pain trying to
remember which people|lists don't accept rich text messages, and every
time I send them a message formated incorrectly I have to apologize
profusely. :)

If we cannot do this currently, how do I get it added to the list of
Gmail requested features?

Thanx!
  Richard

I too would also love to have this feature. Mailing lists are the main reason I
need
this. :)

This is really a bug of the e-mail system those people and mailing list are
using.

Gmail is smart enough (i just tested it) to send a plain-text version of the
mail. A
recieving mail system should be able to process such an e-mail (its almost
2007!).

Let's see how many people star this issue.

One of the reasons that many of the mailing lists I am a part of do not allow
HTML
email is that spam is sent almost exclusively that way, so by blocking HTML
they can
cut spam down to a minimum. It's also more difficult to write/run some sort of
email
processing program/whatever on an email with lots of stuff that is not part of
the
content.

We all know that Gmail can send plain text, we just want to be able to have it
happen
automatically for certain contacts.

Two years have passed, we're still waiting GMail team. It would be really
useful to
be able to choose the default format.

Just found out that if i compose a new email, while the last one i composed was
in
rich format, i see a "plain text"-'button'. When i switch to plain text, the
next
email i compose starts in plain text, and there is a 'rich formatting'-'button'.
Basically this is the switch-option. I just was looking for it in the settings
:-)...

Would be great to have as a google labs plugin, just don't know where to start
with that.

What I would really love for my business Gmail is an automatic load (when
hitting the
"Compose" button )of my personalised format. The font colour, my greeting, my
sign
off, address details and privacy statement. Heaven, I guess being able to
include my
logo is too much to ask.

@marnimason you could do most of that with your signature I think. Or one of the
firefox plugins that lets you make an html signature. Or try some of the google
labs
gmail plugins in your gmail settings.

Please add this feature, it seems bizarre that you can't do it already? What
happened to do no evil? HTML email IS evil!
