We should pick genres too so we have a rotation of different styles and don't stick to the same thing month after month. Maybe one series & one film a month?
@rachelnicole or we could identify multiple genres and pick one thing for each every month :)
I recently started "Stein's Gate" which has been very weird / interesting. Top of many lists
Here's the genres on Cruncyroll as a start:
I'd love to alternate between 'currently airing/recently aired' (the last two years) and 'classics' (anything older than two years).
Since we were joking about longer series, for some of them it is possible to pluck an arc to watch without missing much context of a longer, larger narrative. Sailor Moon is a good example of this - I think the Sailor Moon S arc is my fave and it can be watched on it's own. Not suggesting that one specifically, just using as an example.
I'd love an excuse to re-watch Knights of Sidonia (sci-fi, but also weirdly slice-of-life in the second arc/season), and most recently I caught one episode of Arpeggio of Blue Steel (sci-fi) and thought that 'invasion of futuristic battleships that close off world ports' was a delightfully different premise.
@afabbro perhaps we can solve that by varying what we pick for each genre, so some are current simulcast, some already aired, some are huge and nobody will watch all of (Fairy Tail) and maybe even a few movies.
We can skip ecchi lol
First attempt at pairing down genres:
Sports / Historical / Comedy
In my experience sports anime is hilarious.
I've heard really good things about yowapeda
I'll throw out a bunch of suggestions from things I've seen.
I added food to the last category since the similarities between food anime and sports anime are uncanny.
OMG FOOD ANIME?!
I know Dustin and I were planning on watching Serial Experiments Lain next.
@rachelnicole there's a ton of food anime, there's one entirely about Curry, there's one about bread making where the main character has the "palms of the sun" which are abnormally warm and allow him to knead better than any other baker.
@mikeal fuckkkkk that sounds awesome.
:+1: for food anime. Every one I've seen has been amazing. Silver Spoon, Ristorante Paradiso and Food Wars are also all entertaining.
I'm very much into the idea of a food anime.
Can we also do a recipe club and make food to go along with the anime?
@TheAlphaNerd the manga for Addicted to Curry has a recipe at the end of each issue. Warning: it's a bit ecchi :(
@mikeal
I wish avoiding ecchi was easier.
Anyone else frustrated by the fact that nearly every anime ever feels the need to have a swimming/bathing fan service episode? They often feel totally out of place with the rest of the series too.
People are dying and the world is coming to an end, we need to stop some horrible plot to destroy the world, but we've got time to spend a day at the beach, right?
I'm an outsider that just happened upon this comment section by chance, but I feel the need to recommend Planetes. Basically, a group of astronaut salarymen collect space garbage.
@gigablah holy shit that sounds awesome
These are some of the must follow anime for this year, have linked to the show.
Ongoing
Completed
We really slacked on this, huh.
Tell me about it...
I've been binging Jojo's Bizarre adventure. On the last episode of season 2.
Should we maybe just make thread to nerd out about specific shows?
I decided to get up to date on Dragon Ball Super (40+ episodes) and started watching Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress (which is AWESOME). Oh, and I'm still watching JoJo each week and it is still awesome :)
Let's discuss which anime to watch in February.
We should pick stuff that most people haven't seen but a few people have seen and can vouch for being good.
We may also want to pick more than one thing to spread out the genres a bit.
Discuss!
