@maxogden looks like a good fit. @mikeal what kind of budget are we working under for the kids track?
how much you need :) we can buy a bunch of these if we need to.
It might make sense to pick them up/order in person given the time frame. Their office is on broadway in oakland. I'd call first

These kits seem great, but with the unknowns of kid count and ages + the expense it might make more sense to just get Glue Guns, X-actos, and some metal rulers. Getting glue guns to do cardboard model making could be a lot of fun. I'm not sure how many kids 8+ we will have. I'm imagining about 12 kids in the 8->13 range that could handle blades and hot glue guns. 5 x-acto blades and 5 glue guns plus some metal rulers. I'll bring cutting surfaces. And cardboard can be found on site.

We're pulling together a laser turret workshop for remote controlling cats for LXJS tomorrow. https://github.com/tableflip/lasercat-workshop If we can get some time on a laser cutter in SF then we could build them at NodeConf too. It's pre-fab lego style, so might be fun to do on the SO track.
@mikeal if you would like to grab a bunch of these they will be a great session for the 8+ kids track - and with the Hot Glue and X-acto stuff I just specified we can build these out and kids can also use raw cardboard. @olizilla wonderful project, probably too much for the kids track to build... unless we can get a laser cutter on site! Perhaps you could bring one and show the group?
@lyle another idea for x-acto, glue and cardboard might be to have kids design stuff using this app I made http://voxelbuilder.com/ and then print them out using https://maxogden.github.io/voxel-2d-print/?png=http://i.imgur.com/ccBkMVY.png
I've only tested with normal color paper printers but it should work well when transposed to cardboard as well with some imagination / enforced minimalism in the design process

So, I have time to buy some stuff at a store this weekend. I definitely don't have time before the conference to laser cut anything. I'm all for this, and can reimburse whatever happens, I just don't have time to execute on it.
@maxogden love it! @mikeal any way we can get an inkjet printer and paper?
just find one on amazon and i'll order it :)
@lyle i met the guy who runs http://www.thegridkit.com/ this last weekend, it is super cool! they are laser cut kits made here in oakland. @aemaier mentioned you were looking for some activities to do, so this might be a good one
