Thank you @cp2004 for pointing that out. Merging your changes now as I agree that my plugin should not force the 1.9.0 onto anyone, but instead just needs to warn them about running an unsupported version of octoprint.
Using
plugin_requires
will make this plugin upgrade OctoPrint alongside it, if someone on 1.8.x was to try and update the plugin. As much as we'd love to get everyone upgraded ASAP, you'll inevitably find someone that doesn't want to and gets grumpy, so we can save ourself from that. You will probably end up with the odd bug report from someone saying 'The installation is broken!1!1!' but they can be told they can't read instead.The output is not completely obvious with the newer versions of pip in the last couple of years, but it does exist:
