Delay UA reduction until dependent specifications have been updated and deployed #11

Open jwrosewell opened 2 years ago

jwrosewell commented 2 years ago

Structured User Agents (SUA) are still in draft and not yet deployed. This work needs to be completed so that device, platform, browser and app information can be reliably transmitted through the Open RTB ecosystem. Until this is complete those companies that do not require Open RTB are advantaged. See ads-privacy.

@jwrosewell how does this relate to an origin trial or a bug?

jwrosewell commented 2 years ago

It relates to User Agent Reduction and the fact that the Open RTB eco system is not ready with the UACH replacement.

The most recent quarterly report states.

This is a community report advising that the eco system is not ready.

OK, I take your answer to mean that it does not relate to the origin trial and is not a bug. I asked because you added those labels.

Thanks for the input. We have already rolled out "Phase 4", aka minor version version reduction to 100% of Chrome users in versions 101 and above. See https://www.chromium.org/updates/ua-reduction/#updates

BTW The system added those labels and assignments.

In relation to the update shared this issue relates to reversing 4, and aligning phase 5, 6 and 7 to the changes which the wider ecosystem would need to make to be able to continue to operate.

BTW The system added those labels and assignments.

Oh apologies! Thanks, there must be some setting - I'll look into that.

Do you have an update on this issue and the readiness of IAB, IAB Tech Lab, and OpenRTB to support these changes? Can you provide one in the January 2023 quarterly report please?

Without such changes in place then the advertising eco-system will be materially disadvantaged by the User-Agent Reduction activity. This is likely to preference Google’s B2B advertising solutions that are not similarly impacted.

User-Agent Reduction is covered by the commitments and is listed in Annex 1 of the commitments Google entered into with the CMA in February 2022.

I notice that in the second and third quarterly reports no response was provided. I had understood that by providing feedback to Google via issues on your account, as directed by Google, that this would have been covered in the report. I understand you have received training in relation to the commitments.
