Image display friction (possibly worth a separate discussion) #100

Thanks for your work on the website!

I'm sure that we've discussed this before, but the current method of enlarging the photos feels (to me at least) like it generates a lot of friction during the browsing experience. The first click does nothing useful as, on a typical display, the image is basically the same size as the one already displayed on the catalogue page. You then have to click on a relatively small area of text to a usefully enlarged image. If you're trying to examine a lot of images, this gets tedious.

In my view, the first image that emerges following the click should either be usefully big, or, (the better option in my view) the initial click should just open a full sized image in a new tab. Perhaps this would be the best placeholder option pending the implementation of a more sophisticated image display at some point down the road. On the other hand, I'm not sure how the "new tab" option would effect the user experience on portable devices. Perhaps we could discuss this when we're able to meet. Cheers.

The image boxes appear abnormally small on the site. I'm not sure why. The main reason clicking on an image doesn't just take you to viewing the full size image is that the pop-up has space for image titles and captions.

100 Fixes the modal to be a more reasonable size. Leaving the issue open for further discussion of whether we want a modal at all.
