Milkdrop 3, and 3+ app will close/crash within 30 minutes of opening #76

The free version and the 3+ that I bought both will not run for more than 15-30 minutes without closing. I did not see this issue in previous "issues" posts so I'm not sure this is an issue with the app or my own computer. I have a fairly new Lenovo Legion 5 pro 16 so I doubt it's a performance issue. I have been listening to music with Spotify, and when I open the Milkdrop app, it operates well and goes to full screen no problem, however on occasion it will close when exiting full screen. I have only had this app a few days, however I have tested both versions a number of times and Milkdrop has not stayed open for longer than 30 minutes. It seems like it fully closes when this happens, as the window is no longer open and it is not listed in the task manager. Opening it again will start the app again no problems, until it closes on it's own shortly afterwards.

Thanks for any insight. I hope I can get this working, as it is awesome. Great work, thanks for keeping Milkdrop going. Best visualizer I've found. Previously I was using the Butterchurn.com website, which is also great.

Did you add any extra presets or textures to the default setup of MilkDrop3?

Dobbie-Wan commented 5 months ago

No I haven’t changed anything after installing except to have it open to fullscreen, but nothing with additional presets or anything else.

milkdrop2077 commented 5 months ago

that's weird. what's your processor and gpu?

Dobbie-Wan commented 5 months ago

the chip is 12th Gen Intel Core i7 - 12700H , the graphics is NVIDIA GeForce 3050 Ti Laptop GPU.

I just went to update both winamp and directx with the links provided in your related doc, and while I had already done the DirectX, Winamp updated from version 5.66 to 5.9.2, and before the update it had something to add to the directX files. I'm sorry I didn't write down what it was specifically and don't remember now. but I've just had Milkdrop Plus running for about 15 minutes and it closed again. I reset the computer and tried again and it closed again after about 10 minutes. from your response earlier it sounds like some presets might have this effect, is there any way to determine which ones and disable them? I'm not knowledgeable in much in the way of programming or troubleshooting this kind of problem.

Did you reset your whole Windows? try to do a clean install if you can, a clean ISO file from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows11 put on a usb stick with Rufus.

You're the only user to complain about this so it's hard to tell what's wrong. I need to implement a log file, it could be one a few presets that trigger an error. What you can do is to load the first one (press 'L' then load 000.milk2) then press 'R' to load them in sequentially order, then, press f4 to show then name, then H,H,H until it crash. when it does find the preset it was loading (watch the names on the top right corner), then try to load it again, does it crash again? please make a list if it does.

Thanks for these recommendations I’ll try them out as soon as I can. I really appreciate the quick responses.  I’ll be away for the weekend so I won’t have a chance to try those things out until next Tuesday, but you’ll hear back from me then.  Thanks again, the app is awesome except for this issue I’m having which won’t be forever.-Alex DobbieOn Jun 27, 2024, at 6:42 AM, milkdrop2077 @.***> wrote: Did you reset your whole Windows? try to do a clean install if you can, a clean ISO file from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows11 put on a usb stick with Rufus. Good day, I figured out what was wrong... Primarily user error. I tried the method of testing the presets, and screen recorded so I could know when it crashed, and caught a frame that said "Error: out of memory", which led me to realize that I did not have my graphics card set as the default in the Global Settings. It's working as it should now. I appreciate you taking the time to respond and deal with my ineptitude. I read through the preset instructions and that is an awesome feature, and the ones that came with the app are just fantastic. I thought milkdrop 2 was awesome, but wow. I can't say enough about how cool this is.
Anyway, thank you again for your time, and all you've put into this app.
I'm on instagram @Dobbie_Wan_Glass if you're into heady glass. hmu if you see something you like and I'll give you a good price.
