Determine auction items for fundraising #9

Open lehnberg opened 6 years ago

lehnberg commented 6 years ago

To help raise funds for development and security audit, it's been suggested we create auctions for special items and experiences. These could be collectible items, money-can't-buy-experiences. Signed shirts, place messages in blocks. Auction of equipment, developer face time, 1:1 meet and greets, speeches at company events, a UTXO off the genesis block, or a 1 grin ICO.

This ticket collects ideas and tracks the progress of introducing these. Feel free to raise ideas and suggestions below.

  1. Igno should literally buy a quill, ink, and some fancy stationary and write a handful of different notes with predictions, riddles, etc on them for the highest tiers. They can have expiration dates on them, not to be opened until 2050, 2030, etc. I think those would be incredibly valuable. "His" signature on the outside so it can be framed as a simple autograph until the time is ripe. Imagine unopened letters from Satoshi, waiting to be read. Would cause a furvor. Even better if they have utter lies in them like "have you found the hidden snitch asset yet?" With a request that if they are ever auctioned off again in the future some of the proceeds go to the grin fund.

  1. Signed poster for the top tier. On our curent schedule I don't think we can get any totally original art in time, but there are a few super cool Gringotts bank posters I found (and one really cool empty map from Alice in Wonderland) we could use.

Mockup here: https://tmgox.com/product/one-of-a-kind-poster-signed-by-grin-core-members/

Issue is actually getting it signed by everyone. Those at grincon can do so there, Igno can mail one of his letters to be included as an autograph. I was thinking of getting a couple of inked stamps made to stamp the back with to make it feel even more authentic. Could be the case we would have to ship it to a few people to sign and then finally back to the auction winner.

  1. Signed merch. Can easily ship some shirts/sweaters to @hashmap and get everyone there to sign. Can do some one-off block0 or grincon editions of items to make them even more limited. For lower tiers these limited edition blockcon designs may suffice without signatures. May still require shipping to the missing people to get their signatures.

Unfortunately the shipping window has closed to get stuff to conference on time, and the lowest hanging fruit of the poster was custom printed and I knew had only a slim chance of arriving so I didn't pull the trigger. I think we should at least announce a (near) future auction at grincon0, and then do it online unless we can find another event to host it. If you want to point people to the 50,000$ signed poster listing on tmgox above, I'm confident we can daisy chain shipping from one council member to the next and still get a signed poster in relatively short order.

I think someone should get at the very least some printer paper, or maybe print out the the cypherpunk manifesto or something and bring it to grincon and have whoever is there from the council sign it, and then let Daniel hang on to it until we auction it off. Then at least we took advantage of some of the council being in one place, and give us one really great item to start the auction.

We should plan ahead see if we can have a one year anniversary auction.
