I understand the logic behind it and why you would want to do that, but reading the rules a couple times at page 489 and 508 for party size and xp reward, I'm not sure if it is backed by the rules. The way I understand it, if you would have the same encounter for a party of 4 and a party of 5, the fight would be easier for the party of 5 and still award the same exp, which is kinda weird, but the fights will take longer too, so I'm not sure if that is the reason why the rules still want you to award the exp for 4 players.
My reasoning is with the following example: If you run 2 campaigns with the exact same encounters, one with 4 players and one with 5 players, with your formula, if you put the same fights for both groups, the 5 players campaign would make less exp from those encounters. The fights would be easier because of the additional player, but it wouldn't necessarily be shorter, also because of the additional player.
Is it possible that Paizo worded the rules the way they did so a bigger party would still level at about the same speed overall? It's also very possible that we have a different understanding of the rules from pages 489 and 508 🤔
I have asked this question on the pf2 discord as I am not sure either.
Quick question about experience reward of an encounter with a group of 6pc Page 508 (https://2e.aonprd.com/Rules.aspx?ID=578) state:
The rules for encounters (page 489) describe how to accommodate groups of a different size, but the XP awards don’t change—always award the amount of XP listed for a group of four characters.
There is 2 reading I can come up with of this rule (maybe because I'm not a native speaker)
everyone gets 90xp
you should award 4/6 * 90xp = 60xp
which is correct and can someone explain why? in scenario 1, it make sense as the players invest more IRL time into the encounters and it lets the leveling happen to the same IRL time in scenario 2 it makes sense as it keeps the xp reward the same in-game for adventures path and will stop the players from leveling faster than the AP intends them to
A quick search on reddit seems to point toward awarding 4/6 of the experience, but no one seems to be able to provide a better explanation than the rules on p.508 which is up to interpretation in my opinion.
Edit: consensus of the community seems to be in agreement with the way this pull request calculates the xp to award to players.
Yeah I agree, after reading more and talking about it with @TheHeck, I think this make sense. I didn't had the same understanding of the rule at first.
I'll merge this into another branch to edit the wording a little and remove the commented line before merging it to main.
Thanks a lot!
Added a to reward XP tracker to the fight club.
With this a GM can easily see the XP they should reward if their party is a smaller or greater than a four man party. For example a Moderate Encounter should always provide 80XP, even if the party is of a size larger or smaller than four. See Core Rulebook page 508 Party Size for more information.
