read text message indicated as unread

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Get a text message
2. Possibly: Read and mark as read from an external app (MightyText?)
3. Note that rarely an item is still indicated on app but not within hangouts, 
the default and only phone based message app.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Expecting the messages extension hidden, instead shows a recent text message 
that was read and is marked as unread in text app indicated as unread in 
extension. 

What version of the product are you using?
Newest

Which device and Android version are you experiencing this issue on?
Nexus 5

Are you using a custom launcher or ROM? If so, which one? Note that custom
launchers and ROMs are not supported.

Please provide any additional information below.
Only way to clear is to send new text message to indicated person.

I can confirm marking a text read from an external app (in my case, mighty 
text) causes the extension to keep a notification that the message is still 
unread.

this happens for me, but only when receiving an iMessage from an iThing with 
multiple recipients.  the only way to clear is to delete original message 
thread ans all associated messages.

Same issues here on nexus 5 and i use google hangouts and sms popup for 
notifications

Sony Xperia Z2, Android v4.4.4, DashClock just installed today, so current 
version.  SMS count is 1 even though there are no unread messages in the phone. 
 Removed & re-added widget, changed various settings, removed & re-added SMS 
extension; still erroneously showing 1 unread SMS.
