Merge patches with fixes and improvements #5

Hi, @minacle thanks for having brought this project back to life. Debian have applied many patches with fixes and improvements of different people and forks over the years, I think can be useful to apply also here (if there isn't already better improvements/fixes related): https://salsa.debian.org/debian/chntpw/-/tree/master/debian/patches?ref_type=heads
