I had to manually enable the (luacheck) action on this PR. It seems that there's some more work needed.

oops. I removed the unused = false line from .luacheckrc to get rid of superfluous MP and NS lines and accidentally left it in the commit. it uncovers a bunch of additional errors not related to this PR
