Same here. Really annoying not to be able to pay for movies on Google play and
using Google chromecast and not getting 5.1 through DTS passthrough!

Wtf, Google, are you really trying to put Chromecast on your shit products
list, next to failures like Wave, Hangouts or G+? Add damn codec support, some
cheap Chinese devices are already better than your device!

As many other said, pass-through is what I'd need. My receiver will happily
decode DTS-HD and AC3. I don't need the Chromecast to do anything fancy with it.

I would imagine the app in question would have to be aware that sending AC3 to
CC is now a valid option (provided the TV or receiver can handle AC3 of course).

Hey there, just tried testing it with an MKV (h264 + 5.1 AC3) with Synology DS
Video App and Plex App streaming to Chromecast from my Galaxy S3 (Android
4.1.2). Both times I did not get 5.1 Sound, only Stereo.
Is AC3 5.1 working for everyone else? (Build is definitely 19084)

Why would you add ac3 but not DTS...
Please...Please add DTS.
As a result of your lack of implementation of DTS, I have to bypass my
chromecast and use my PC instead.
I want to be able to use my chromecast as my go to device but with issues such
as this one, I can't.

Same issue for me, tested with Synology Video Station, DS Video on iOS 8,
Chromecast and many MKV files. No sound is playing.
By the way, the passtrough option on Video Station does not help.
Used Plex server, but my NAS can not transcode video on the fly.
Google, I am disapointed, why put on the market a product which is not
compatible with all formats ??!

Why no passthrough for DTS?
Wrote an App for Android and can't publish it without DTS sound because it
streams media from a media station, which use DTS...

Just a few remarks:
1- Only AC3 passthrough is supported. This means an A/V receiver is needed to
actually decode AC3 (usually, TVs do not support AC3 passthrough).
2- Apps might have to be updated (some of these apps used to transcode AC3,
they should now transcode only when the receiver do not support AC3
passthrough).
3- A quick way to test the AC3 passthrough support with your setup:
Assuming you have a web server hosting your video (e.g. YOURVIDEO.mkv), create in the same directory an HTML file which embeds your video in a media element:
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<body>
<video autoplay controls>
<source src="YOURVIDEO.mkv" type="video/webm">
Your browser does not support the video tag.
</video>
</body>
</html>
Then in Chrome for Android open the URL referring to this html file. Then put
the video full screen to have the cast capability. Cast to your Chromecast.
With an A/V receiver supporting AC3 passthrough, audio should play (otherwise,
you should get only video).

My TV specs say that it has a Dolby Digital 5.1 decoder, but it still won't
play audio when I cast through a chrome tab.
http://www.lg.com/us/commercial/large-lcd-tvs/lg-32LH200C
What am I missing here, I'm not an A/V guy, having the decoder means it should
support the passthrough yeah? Or can it not go through the HDMI encoded?

I have a sony tv with dolby digital 5.1 decoder built-in and chromecast seems
not working as expected, there is no sound from the tv with an mkv file with
ac3 5.1 inside, but I tested another mkv file with AAC-LC 5.1 and it played the
sound from the tv... what is wrong?

This is not working for me. I have cast both mp4 and mkv test files with 6
channel ac3 using a webpage, allcast, and local cast. There is no sound sent
through to the tv. I have tested the files using a blueray player attached to
the same HDMI port on the tv, and it passed the ac3 just fine - my sound bar
displays the dolby digital symbol and correctly plays the tracks through the
rear speakers. So I know it is not the tv or the soundbar.
I have attached my mkv and mp4 test files.
I also do not get a 5.1 option on the Netflix app, which doesn't bother me
since my soundbar actually doesn't support dolby digital plus, but it makes me
wonder if somehow my Chromecast has misdetected some capability I have somehow
and therefore won't do the psssthrough. Ideas?
