If we do not enable "clicking menu items that have children" then it becomes impossible to navigate directly to a section (or submenu item). However, you can still navigate to the section via the crumb trail, which means you still need to set up a default view.
But, if you set up an existing item as a default view, then it disappears from the menu, and the only way to navigate to it is via the crumb trail. This can be confusing. :-)
