[Support] Setup issues no Cmd4 Config found #76

Closed tommytaddler closed 1 year ago

tommytaddler commented 1 year ago

Hi All,

I'm having issues setting up cmd4-AdvantageAir on Raspberry Pi 3, clean OS Raspberian Pi install and the latest stable HomeBridge build.

The error i'm recieving is: ERROR: no Cmd4 Config found in "/var/lib/homebridge/config.json"! Please ensure that Homebridge-Cmd4 plugin is installed

From what i can see the /var/lib/homebridge/config.json file is populated correctly and checked other cmd4Config_AA_cmd hostname.json is pulling data correctly from the cmd4 tablet.

Can anyone please point me in the right direction?

Hey @tommytaddler, have you followed all the steps on the readme and installed homebridge-cmd4 plug-in as well?

tommytaddler commented 1 year ago

I believe so mitch7391, will double-check. T

No worries, if you are confident you have followed all of that with no issue then you can try run the ‘Check Configuration’ button instead of the ‘Config Creator’ and it should tell you if something is missing.

I have this issue. Gave up trying to troubleshoot it ages ago. Let us know if you resolve it!

@8lackIce if you don’t open an issue, then we are not able to help you, please don’t be shy! Just checking over my issues and you had it running and working at one point :) we can’t improve this plug-in if people don’t report the issues. I would be happy to try and help you if you are still interest in getting this working?

@tommytaddler did you have any luck?

tommytaddler commented 1 year ago

Hi @mitch7391 , got it working partially last night... am starting with a clean build to be sure. R, T

mitch7391 commented 1 year ago

Glad to hear it @tommytaddler, can you please let us know what you did differently in the end so that it may help @8lackIce. Also please let me know if ‘partially’ means you still are missing some functionality and we will see what we can do to get you sorted :)

Hi @mitch7391 , referring to link following Installation Details the logs looked promising (attached), I'm receiving an error in the Homebridge logs stating 'No plugin was found' etc despite what i thought was resolved.

Perhaps I'm misreading the documentation, after completion of Step 2. Install Cmd4 Plugin, to clarify is Step 3. meant to copy config.json the file from: $HOME/.homebridge/ to: /var/lib/homebridge or update the homebridge core config.json file in homebridge?

For the moment, I've bricked the Raspberry Pi trying to figure this out, I'll rebuild it to a clean state... really liked to get this going if possible :)

Kind Regards,

T

Hey @tommytaddler, I would not follow the installation steps on the cmd4 page that you linked; all that is required is to use the search on the ‘plugins’ tab of Homebridge UI. Install homebridge-cmd4 from there using the install button (like you would have for this plug-in). I can see how all of that is quite confusing!

I am not sure how this would have bricked your RPi, but maybe something you did on the command line level installing cmd4 through those steps messed it up.

We will definitely get you up and running! You will just have to be patient with me as we work through it :) can I get you to do the following:

  1. Re-install you Homebridge OS if you think you need to.
  2. Install homebridge-cmd4 through the Homebridge web UI search and install button (do not follow this steps on cmd4’s page).
  3. Install homebridge-cmd4-advantageair through the same method.
  4. Use the ‘Configuration Check’ button before using the ‘Config Creator’. It will complain about not having a config, but if there is anything else wrong with your setup, it will complain about that first and give us a clue as to the problem!
  5. Let me know what it complains about!

I might not be able to respond until tomorrow as I am going to see The Killers tonight, but will get back to you tomorrow worst case.

@mitch7391 sorted! You're instructions resolved the issue! Thankyou It was falling on 'homebridge-cmd4' plugin install which i was following another link, went down the rabbit hole to resolve. @8lackIce follow the instructions exactly, this will get you going :)

mitch7391 commented 1 year ago

@tommytaddler phew! Glad to hear it :) perhaps I can update the README to specially say do not follow the instructions on cmd4’s page? Maybe that might save someone one some trouble in future and make it a bit simpler…

@8lackIce I am happy to keep this issue open until we resolve your issues if you like?

8lackIce commented 1 year ago

Let me give it a crack over the weekend and I’ll let you know how I go. If it’s a different issue we can maybe close this one and open another.

Part of the reason I didn’t troubleshoot further was because I didn’t want to interrupt that flurry of development that was happening a few months back. You guys were storming :) Last thing you need then is a user issue ;)

cheers

Awesome, no pressure on rushing into it @8lackIce :) but do let me know how you go and what it complains about when you do it, we will get you all up and running.

Yeah we were on a roll for sure! At this stage I think the plugin has settled for the time being until people request some of the new features (we already have a fair idea what those will be, but until users have those devices it is hard for us without them to create support for). But never let our workflow stop us from helping you if you are stuck; that is probably more important than new features!

tommytaddler commented 1 year ago

@mitch7391 Updating the README documentation would help for sure, great work!

@8lackIce it took me less than 10 minutes to set up. Remember to statically assign an IP address to the Advantage Air device before running.

mitch7391 commented 1 year ago

Very good point @tommytaddler, adding a note to the user to make sure they assign a static IP first has always slipped my mind when I edit the steps!

tommytaddler commented 1 year ago

Nice work @mitch7391, you'll make Advantage Air / AppleHome Kit users very happy! Thanks again for the help :)

Followed updated installation processes. testing perfectly
