Would show your current city location with a red dot
Would make visible only countries you have NOT read about
Very Small, like 250px by 200px or something
Consider instead of compass for the moment

MATT: It'd be helpful to have the thumbnail map at greater scale to help place where in the world I am for the less well known cities. That might also help you demote the + / - zoom buttons in terms of visual priority. The user is letting TI take them on a tour of the world more than they are actually using the map as they normally would.
