The extensions already have a "hidden preference" for this. The iOS and Android apps need an option, and it needs to be visible to users in some way. This will make it far easier to run your own server.

Judging by the commit history, I think this project is dead! Only if I was familiar with JS and the likes to help :-|

It isn't dead, but it is moving slowly at the moment. Unfortunately we all have other jobs at this point, so we don't have a ton of time to maintain Mitro. We are trying to find a way to make some fixes, but its going to take a bit of time.
