Would be great to be able to filter columns in order to show search results only for ONE genre or something else. Or filter year, so that you see only the songs from the currents year.

I suppose this could also be implemented as a per-field "advanced search" functionality? Since most of our tag inputs are free-form, traditional filtering could be cumbersome on fields like genre (although still doable).

I don't really know what you mean with "advanced search"...I have attached a file so you can see what functionality I wish for Mixxx. I guess the way it is implemented in Songbird would not bed good for mixxx due to the needed space..

Another option would be a funtionality like you have in Excel & Co. When you enable the auto-filter, you can specify what contents shall be shown for each column.

Yeah I was thinking the excel way, that iTunes method would work too (although at the expense of lots of space).

My idea for advanced search is a separate search dialog that allows you to search in different fields. Something like http://itservices.uchicago.edu/img/email/tbird-advanced-search.png but with field applicable to audio files and not email.

I see, but this takes up a lot of space, too. If the Excel way isn't too complicated to implement I think this is way to go for! Takes less spaces than the other options and has full functionality.

You can kind of already do this with the normal search, e.g.:

genre:hip-hop year:2000

Will find just hip-hop from the year 2000.

Here is another example for how it could look like. This way it's much faster than searching, because you don't have to type anything. Typing letter "B" should take you to B.Y.O.B. in addition to the mouse / jog wheel up and down movement.
