Clean up the existing tests and get them working properly #36

The NUnit setup fails miserably as it is today. The tests are highly
essential in order to move things forward.

The tests fail with a segmentation error without any other form of feedback. 
I'm a
bit suspicious about my current ubuntu installation. Will try again with a fresh
openSUSE install.

the tests can now be run without errors. There are a couple of tests that fail, 
but
at least now all the tests are run.
