App Quits After Download

Hello there, as I'm trying this app, I cannot get past step 5. Upon opening the app, once it is in the "Applications" folder, I confirm the AIM 5.1.3036 installation from archive.org. The terminal window pops up, and I watch the progress of the download, and then everything closes up and I'm never prompted to run the installation wizard. When I attempt to reopen the app, it doesn't respond. After this point, When clicking on "Show Package Contents," I can see the installation file in "Contents/SharedSupport/prefix/drive_c," but I cannot move to the next step. I'm not sure if I'm missing something, but I appreciate your time!

np! That's interesting. I think I might have seen this before when I tested on Sonoma.

Would you please try two different things?

1. Restart your computer and retry the installation. There might have been a stuck Wine process that prevented the installation from continuing.
2. I slimmed down the Wine container by removing a ton of files that are not used by AIM. It's possible that I removed a critical file that's needed by your system. I just uploaded a new release v0.2.0 that has not had any files removed. Please try this release and let me know what happens!

Oh and one more possibility. Can you please re-download v.0.1.0 and run the installer before moving the application to the Applications folder? (Basically, run steps 5, 6, then 4) It's possible that there are some permissions issues that prevent the installer from running once the app has been moved.

Hello, just reporting back here. I tried a restart with both files, with no luck both end in the same result: closing after the installer is downloaded and I never am prompted with the AIM Installation Wizard. I also had "Activity Monitor" running in the background to ensure there were no other Wine processes active. I also tried running both installers from the "Downloads" folder (I also tried the Desktop). Before trying the install in each location, I unzipped a fresh version of the App, and ran the Terminal code (with the file in the Downloads folder) to remove the Quarantine Flag before running it in each location (Downloads folder, Applications folder, and Desktop).

Not sure if this helps or not, but upon my first launch of the app (v.0.1.0 and v.0.2.0), according to the Activity Monitor App, there is 1 instance of "wineserver" and 8 instances of "wine64-preloader" running. Upon second launch, I'm not prompted with anything, but on activity monitor, I see the above processes in Activity Monitor for a few seconds, and then they all terminate on their own.

Additionally, I also tried going into the "Get Info" and unlocking the App all the way in the bottom right corner of the information window.

Thanks for trying out those things. Another thing that might aide debugging is inspecting the wine logs as the application runs.

You can do this by navigating to ~/Applications/Wineskin/AOL\ Instant\ Messenger.app/Contents and opening Wineskin.app. Click Advanced, then click Test Run. Allow the application to run (or not) for a bit, then you should be prompted after like 30 seconds to view the execution logs. Click yes, and then please paste the contents of the log here.

I've been using the Running Man wrapped version of 3.5, and that runs with no problem, however, there is a bug: I can chat with friends, but they always appear "offline," and so I can never see who is actually on. I'm using that as a temp, but it's kind of frustrating. I'll try debugging both versions right now for you.

Ok, so for version v0.2.0, I removed the Quarantine Flag and have it in both the Downloads folder and Applications folder. When I go to Finder and use the "Go to Folder" and enter the link you provided (~/Applications/Wineskin/AOL\ Instant\ Messenger.app/Contents) there is no folder with that name.

Keeping the App in the Downloads folder, when I use "Show Package Contents" for the app, I can see the "Wineskin" app in the "Contents" folder, but when I double click to open it, I get the following error "Error while writting file: The folder “exec1738953247.bat” doesn’t exist."

Placing the App in the Applications folder and doing the same, I get the error: "Error while writting file: The folder “exec2714706109.bat” doesn’t exist."

Ok, so I just ran version v0.0.1. I encountered the same problem with the "Go to Folder" link... So I went to the app (which I placed in my Applications folder). This time, when I found Wineskin in the Contents folder, it opened. I was able to run "Test Run." Here are the contents of the log:

Have you run the Runningman AIM since your last MacOS update? Curious if the MacOS update caused a regression there.

I've tried aim-for-macos on two different mac machines: an intel and M2 mac. They both worked on the user account mike. When I tried it on a non-mike account, I was able to reproduce the problem you described. Seems like there is a hard-dependency on my user account name somewhere. Will post a fix soon :)

OK release v0.4.0 is out, which should have a fix for this bug.

Note that this version of AIM is incompatible with runningman.network—it only supports AIM <3.5—although the author is working on supporting newer versions of AIM.

Wineskin appears to create a user directory in the wrapper that corresponds to your MacOS user name. In my case it created the directory Contents/SharedSupport/prefix/drive_c/users/mike. I used to delete that directory as the last step in the packaging process before creating the .zip archive, figuring that the directory was superfluous. There's an entry in HKEY_CURRENT_USER that sets the temp directory to Contents/SharedSupport/prefix/drive_c/users/$user/Temp. It appears that AIM installer depended on that directory existing in order to work, else it silently failed.

I didn't actually dive in and remove the hard dependency. Instead, I created a new user packager on my machine for creating the wrapper. So now there's a Contents/SharedSupport/prefix/drive_c/users/packager directory, which seems slightly cleaner. I'm not sure why Wineskin behaves this way, but I'm not bothered enough to deep dive into it.

I have some in-progress documentation that explains how to do wrap AIM, I'll tag you in a PR when it's ready.
