Project Update - Week #4

Discussions

• MK and Aisha marked up Surah 17 while Austin completed Surah 13 of their respective versions.
• We discussed which devices we found in our texts that we had not previously planned to tag for
• Discussed thematic devices (mentions of a place, referrals to God, allusions to a story, etc. These should stay present across versions) vs rhetorical devices (stylistic choices the authors have made that will vary across versions) and which we want to focus our project on. Decided to talk about this more next week after thinking about it.

Goals for next week:

• [ ] Mark up either Surah 17 or 13 depending on what was completed last week, considering the following elements/attributes:

I am excited to see the results you produce. If you're still struggling to decide whether to focus on thematic elements or rhetorical elements I think that focusing on rhetorical elements will yield more interesting data. Because as you mentioned the thematic elements should remain relatively consistent meaning you may not find much contrast between the original vs translated version. Rhetorical devices are presented differently in different cultures so I think you may find more interesting data there.

I also noticed you guys began marking up before creating a schema, my group did it the other way around. Did you find this way easier?
