I'm not sure if these are universally applicable – my local build works with the stock instructions, now that I've changed the brew installation instructions for boost-python3.
I've brought in the updates to Qt and Python versions (in a3d821b0c2df449d33079a3a032914591f5152c4) but will leave the other changes unapplied and point folks to this PR if they're having issues. If many other folks are having issues on Mac, then we can revisit.
