Some links clicked after using integrated search bar do not load #60

Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
Version: 0.5a5.4

Steps to reproduce:
1. open new-tab-jumpstart tab
2. search for something using search field
3. click on any of the resulting links

Expected result: Loading of link clicked
What actually happens: gray page is loaded with search engines listed at top

I've been able to reproduce this when searching for "inquisitor firefox" using
Google and clicking the first link available
(https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/9251/).

I tried the same thing and it shows up properly.
Which Firefox version do you have and what OS?

or is it the same issue as defect 61?
Do you actually have inquisitor addon as your default search engine?

Firefox version is 3.6.9
OS is OS X 10.6.4.
Inquisitor was not used at default search engine. I switched it to Google when
this happened. I set it to yahoo and it also happened. I can test it again
tonight if you would like. Anything special you want me to do (shut off all
other extensions, disable greasemonkey scripts, etc.)?

Thanks for the info, I installed inquisitor addon and tested it, worked fine
(except for that other issue). It must be conflict with a different addon. Can
you send me a list of addons that you have installed, or as an alternative, you
could disable all but JumpStart and test it, then if it works turn on one by
one and see when it stops working. If you have greasemonkey scripts then it's
probably a matter of disabling them all and then enabling them one by one.

I think I figured out the problem. It seems to be happening when following a
link to addon.firefox.com. I've tested it with all extensions disabled other
then new-tab-jumpstart and the problem persists.

Try searching for newtabjumpstart and make sure you click a result that links
to a page at adding.firefox.com. I don't think its your extension that is
causing the problem. Think it might be the site.

Are you sure about the link? Neither addon.firefox.com nor adding.firefox.com
exist, even if I type them into address bar they return page does not exist

Sorry. I typed the wrong url. That one is completely wrong.

Correct link is https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/8914/. It should
be the first result when you search for newtabjumpstart through Google.

Again very sorry.

Nothing to be sorry about, I tried that first link actually, but since it
worked I thought there might have been something else.
Anyway I retested it with Ubuntu Linux, Firefox version 3.6.8, and Windows XP,
Firefox 3.6.8, and it opens fine. It's a different version, so 3.6.9 might
behave differently - I doubt though, and it's a different OS, which might be
the issue. However there's no way for me to test it (I'll try to find someone
with OS X tomorrow).

Do other pages show correctly from that google search? Does this page show
properly when you copy/paste it to address bar?

There's another thing - there are 2 sites for me for example that are not
showing at all on my work's computer, however they work fine on IE on the same
machine or Firefox on my home computer. I'm guessing there's something wrong
with my profile and history for those sites. But that is consistent behavior,
they never work on that machine on that particular profile. That's why I'm
asking whether this page is showing when you type it into address bar.

I hope we can get to the bottom of this :)

I can go to the link with FF if I enter it directly into the address bar and if
I click the link in a normal tab. I just tested it again using BING as my
search engine and the same thing happens when I follow a link to any page on
addons.mozilla.org domain/web site.

I have no idea what could be causing the issue. At this point I'm starting to
wonder if its my machine or bad luck that's causing the problem.

It might be iframe on that page ... I'll see if I can find a machine to test it
on. Do you have any errors in Error Console (menu Tools/Error Console)?

I see no errors when I click a link to addons.mozilla.org. I get a few errors
and warning when the search results are shown, but they are coming from google
and yahoo, not your extension. I'm really confused now.

I'm sorry I can't give you the info you need. I just can't figure out what is
causing the problem. At this point I'm ready to say just leave it alone for now
as its not a major bug.

Sorry for not replying sooner, had no chance to try it on Mac OS, however I
have changed how that part of the code is working and iframe has been removed
so if it was due to the iframe new version should fix it. I have just uploaded
it and it's pending review. Here's the link if you want to try it before it is
officially reviewed:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/downloads/file/99399/new_tab_jumpstart-
0.5a5.4.1-fx.xpi

Let me know if this fixes the problem

Just updated to 0.5a5.4.1 and I can't reproduce the bug. Whatever you did seems
to have worked.

It was probably iframe that was causing the issue for you. It could be security
settings. Anyway iframe is gone, and I'm glad this issue's gone with it too.
